Gas Applications

Helium
Helium is used to purge and pressurize the liquid hydrogen fuel systems of rockets and spacecraft. This is possible because of helium's low solubility, low boiling point -452°F (-269°C) and inertness. It is the only inert substance that remains a gas in such low temperature environments.

Hydrogen
Hydrogen is used to fuel spacecrafts, and to power their life-support systems and computers -- yielding drinkable water as a by-product.

Oxygen
Oxygen is used as an oxidizer to support combustion for RP1 or LH2 fueled rockets.

Nitrogen
Nitrogen is used as a pressuring and purging agent for temperatures above -32°F.

Neon
The space program uses liquid neon as a coolant for ultra-sensitive infrared imaging and detection equipment.

Xenon
Xenon is a rare gas that is used as an optimum fuel for electric propulsion systems.
